Free Camp

By Lonnie Lorenz

Camp children learning through experience. Play gives children a wide range of skills and helps them develop physically, emotionally & intellectually. Kids learn by doing, living, and experiencing things for themselves. It's one thing to watch life on a computer screen yet, quite another to experience real life.

Overnight camps can be expensive, even if the experiences are worth it. You can afford to send your child to summer camp just consider the following thoughts.Free Camp

Families that in the past have sent their children to private sleep away camps, especially on the east coast, are now looking for less expensive alternatives. Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan all provide summer camp with similar activities and programs at a thirty percent savings.

For other families who still want to send their children to private camps, one way to save on summer camp is to look for alternative programs that might be similar to what you have done in the past yet less expensive. This is just a matter of shopping on the internet for price.Adventure Camp

Parents can also choose a less expensive overnight camp program, such as a YMCA or a even a church program. These summer camps can save sometimes half compared to a private camp.

Park Districts also offer a day summer camp. These are usually the most cost effective, however, day camps generally do not offer the same array of activities and benefits that an overnight summer camp provides.

Summer camps do have discounts and campership programs, but seldom are these programs FREE. Each summer camp decides how to run their own discount program, so it is important to ask the camp director how to become a part of their particular program and see if it will help make camp affordable for you.

If these areas still leave summer camp out of the question the ACA (American Camp Association) recommends: * Parents should inquire into whether the camp participates in income-eligible subsidy programs, for instance through Title XX. * A Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account allows parents to be reimbursed on a pre-tax basis for child care or adult dependent care expenses for qualified dependents that are necessary to allow parents to work, look for work, or to attend school full time. Visit the FSA Feds Web site for more information. * In certain circumstances, day care expenses, including transportation by a care provider, may be considered dependent care services and paid with pre-tax dollars. Visit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for more information. * Child and Dependent Care Tax Credit: The IRS allows an income tax credit of up to $6,000 of dependent care expenses if you have two or more dependents (up to $3,000 for one dependent). The amount of the credit is based on your adjusted gross income and applies only to your federal taxes. This applies to qualifying day camp expenses as well. Visit the FSA Feds Web site for more information.

All camps are not the same and cost is often reflected in quality of programs. Do your homework to ensure a quality experience for your child. Camps can cut costs by useing volunteers while others have paid staff. Generally speaking camps have more control over paid staff. Also asl about counselor-to-camper ratios to determine how many campers are sleeping in each cabin with how many children. It's best if counselors are over 18.

Total cost of the camp is not only tuition, but transportation, canteen and spending money, laundry, off-site trips, and uniforms (if required). So look at the toal package. Ask the director about how much of a deposit is required and if it is refundable. When must the camp fees be paid in full? Ask about refunds. What the policy is if the family's plans change and they withdraw the child from the program before the start of camp? What if problems arise during camp and the child must come home?

Safety is the most important area of any Summer Camp. Regardless of cost, you want to ensure that your child will be safe and will return home at the end of the program. One way to make sure your selected camp is safe is to verify that the camp is an accredited member of the American Camp Association. The ACA ensures that over 300 standards are met in their accreditation process.

Lastly, It is important to try to remember what it is like being a kid. Summers are long! The experiences at summer camp create a lifetime of memories. Many adults fondly recall their camp days. Do what you must, but don't let this summer pass your child by without a Overnight Summer Camp experience. - 22783

When The Going Gets Rough: Dealing with Potty Training Accidents

By Paul Jason James

If you have been working with your toddler on potty training, you've probably had a good number of "accidents". Accidents in potty training can be discouraging to both child and parent and may make the stretch from diapers seem wider than it really is.

You may feel that you have lost progress when a child suddenly has an accident, but occasional potty training accidents are all part of the process. It may have nothing to do with the success of your technique, but may be the child's reaction to a change, like a trip to a relative's house or a birthday party.

When these accidents happen, there are few things to keep in mind. As with many other challenges in child rearing, a positive attitude is the best weapon against potty training accidents. Try to remove the emphasis from the potty training accident itself and place it on making more progress and remembering successes.

Positive feedback is a much more important tool than making negative statements. Celebrating another dry night is more effective than reminding the child he keeps wetting himself.

If potty training accidents start happening frequently, look to external factors to try and diagnose the situation. Your child may have a medical issue like a urinary tract infection or constipation. Remember, he may not have the words to try explain what's happening or what he feels. He may be putting off going to the toilet because he does not know how to deal with an unfamiliar condition.

Another common reason for regression is the arrival of a sibling. Many couples these days choose to space their kids by about two years. Of course, two is primo potty training time, and you may see a surge in potty training accidents upon the arrival of a newcomer who is suddenly absorbing all parental attention. Respond to this situation with understanding.

Remain firm about your shared goals for potty training, but take time to discuss what's going on and give your child a chance to talk about his thoughts. - 22783

There are a Lot Of Causes of Childhood Obesity

By Dave Owen

Being concerned with the reasons for childhood obesity is a good idea for any parent. It isIt's only when you address the actual causes of this condition that you can truly work toward fixing it. Dismissing the problem will not make it disappear. And when a youngster grows up heavy or obese it's that far more difficult to keep the weight under control as an adult. So, what are the common causes of childhood obesity and what can a family do to address these causes?

Consider the common lifestyle that many people lead today and you may get your first indication as to the normal causes of childhood obesity. Youngsters just don't go outdoors and have fun anymore. They usually spend their spare time performing video games or computer games or watching the television set. Lack of physical activity is one of the causes of childhood obesity. The body must burn the calories it assimilates from eating. Any extra calories not burned off are stored as fat.

Today people also typically drive everywhere instead of taking a walk. Children ride the bus to school and are often driven to the bus stop itself. They're driven to their friend's house and to the corner store. And when it's time to do jobs around the house we have many labor-saving devices that limit physical activity as well. Power lawn mowers, snow blowers, and leaf blowers mean that even when doing work around the house there is very little effort expended. All of this lack of activity and lack of physical exertion is another one of those causes of childhood obesity.

The diet that many people follow is another part of those causes of childhood obesity. Most food that people consume is very unhealthy. It's normally cooked with added oil, butter, and sugar to highten the flavor. Unfortunately, this also raises the calorie count! Fast food and junk food are two prime culprits. Hamburgers, fries, potato chips, and items like these are very caloriecompact meaning they have a lot of calories for the amount of nutrient you get. Fast food restaurants are decidedly a large part of the common causes of childhood obesity! Included in this are the numerous vending machines that are just about everywhere, to include the schools. Nearly all of their offerings contain sugary foods and sodas. It's not strange for kids to eat literally thousands and thousands of surplus calories every week. This, even if it doesn't appear as if anyone is gorging.

These common causes of childhood obesity can be treated by any prudent parent. There is no need to go to extremes and anticipate that your child to become a star athlete or to never have a hamburger again. But being balanced and moderate can go a long way in this regard. Addressing these causes of childhood obesity can be as simple as walking after dinner as a family or going for bike rides on a regular basis. Serve healthy and nutritious foods at home to balance out the excessive calories children consume when on their own, and your child should maintain a healthy weight. - 22783

Different Methods for Conceiving a Girl Child

By Tracey Evans

If youve been doing any research online to improve your chances of conceiving a girl then you no doubt have found that most of the different methods are contradictory. Some claim you should have sex as close to ovulation as possible for a girl and others suggest trying to conceive at least 5 days before and no sooner. So which method is right?

This article will look at some of the more popular gender selection methods for conceiving a girl and their success rates so you can decide which one is best for you.

The Shettles Method

By far the most well known method for conceiving a girl or boy baby is the Shettles Method. It relies on timing and says that for a girl you should aim to have intercourse at least five to three days before you ovulate and no sooner as this gives the stronger female sperm a greater chance of surviving long enough to fertilize the egg.

The Shettles Method boasts a 77% success rate for getting pregnant with a female child.

The Whelan Method

The Whelan Method also relies on timing intercourse around when the woman ovulates, but contradicts the Shettles Method in saying that the best time to conceive a girl is when you notice a rise in temperature using charting methods. Using basal body temperature as a guide, Whelan suggests than as soon as you notice the half degree rise in temperature that means that you have just ovulated and therefore you should aim to have intercourse as soon as possible afterwards to get a girl.

There is a 57% success rate for getting a girl baby with the Whelan method.

The O+12 Method

The O+12 Method is gaining popularity with those couples trying for a girl. This method (which is similar to the Whelan method) says that you should aim to have sex around 8 to 20 hours after ovulation (with 12 hours after ovulation being the most successful) if you want a girl.

This method is somewhat hard to implement because it relies on knowing the exact moment that you ovulate (unless you have an ultrasound machine handy - this can be difficult to determine), however devotee's claim a very high 90% success rate. - 22783

Are Cheap Baby Clothes Better For Your Baby?

By Paula Heron

How can cheap baby clothes be better for your baby? The answer is quite simple, by spending less on cute trendy baby clothes there will be money left over to buy something which will help your child's educational development . . . . books. Research has shown that introducing books to babies at a young age helps develop their language, communication skills and their overall learning.

Talking to your newborn baby is very important as all the experts will tell you. Not only does it help you to bond with your baby it helps his brain to develop and begins the learning process. Even before your baby can talk back to you there are ways you can teach him the rules of conversation and communication.

So how do you teach your baby to hold a conversation with you? No matter whether you are breastfeeding or bottle feeding her always hold her and talk to her. It doesn't matter what you talk about - the weather or what you need from the grocery store - the important thing is that you communicate with her.

Your baby's first "conversations" with you mostly take place when you are feeding him. The pauses in his sucking correspond to him taking a turn in the conversation. As he gets older the pauses in sucking will be filled with coos as he responds to you. Always hold your baby when you feed him and talk to him, remembering to leave gaps so he can "talk" to you.

Some moms have said to me that they feel silly talking or singing to their baby who cannot talk as they don't know what to say. I remember when I had my own children I just used to talk about anything, like what we were going to do that day or about doing the laundry it really didn't matter. The baby not only gets to know your voice but it is also very soothing to them and lets them know you are still there when you are not in sight.

You might find it easier to read to your baby and she is never too young to introduce to books. Choose books with brightly colored pictures and a simple rhyming text. Some favorites are Goodnight Moon, The Very Hungry Caterpillar and One Fish To Fish and I'm sure you probably have others from when you were young. Sharing books with your baby helps to teach them any number of things such as the names of things in the world about them, the concept of counting and colors.

Another great way to interact with your baby is to sing nursery rhymes to her. If she is upset lullabies like Hush Little Baby and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star will help soothe her and calm her down. To help with motor skills and co-ordination action rhymes such as Incey Wincey Spider, Patty Cake and This Little Piggy are great fun.

The more time you spend with your baby talking, singing and reading with them the more you are helping development for future learning. Not only are you increasing your child's vocabulary but you are teaching valuable communication skills.

So you see by buying cheap baby clothes and perhaps spending more on books for your baby you are making an early start on their education. - 22783

Terrible Twos Tantrums

By Leslie Patton

Shortly after children turn a year old they start to develop a mind of their own and the tantrums begin. Toddlers get frustrated because they have trouble communicating and they end up throwing a fit.

Be consistent with discipline and whatever happens do not give in. Once they learn they can get their way by throwing a fit they will keep doing it and it will get worse.

Learn to recognize the signs when your child is getting ready to have a tantrum. When you see those signs try to defuse and redirect their attention to something else.

Tantrums can be caused from lack of sleep, being hungry, sick or just needing a little extra attention. That doesn't make it okay to give in, but this should be addressed once the the dust has settled.

Once the tantrum has already started leave the room and ignore the child. They need to know that this is not a good way to get your attention.

You need to remain calm and try not to get angry. Stay firm on the decision you made before they started the tantrum.

It seems like the worst ones always happen in public and it is mortifying to have everyone looking at you and wondering what you are going to do. Handle it just like you would at home, even though it seems like everyone is passing judgment on you.

If your child is old enough to understand you can give them a warning. This can be a time out in a chair or going to the other room by themselves. If you are out in public it may even mean going home. Let them know if they continue there will be consequences for their actions. Allow one minute for each year of the child. - 22783

Finding Adoption Resources Is Easy With The Internet

By Carol Ann

There are thousands of children who are put up for adoption each year for many different reasons. The reasons aren't as important as the fact that there are also thousands of families who want to adopt a child. The adoption process can be overwhelming and disappointing if the adoptive parents run into problems. But help is available and easily accessible, more than ever before.

It is important to find multiple sources to help in the adoption process. The first and most important resource for information should be the adoption agency you are working with. They can supply you with a plethora of information and resources. If they aren't doing this, then you probably should move to another agency.

Joining an adoptive parent's group is another thing you should consider. Your agency will probably be able to refer you to a few. Otherwise, go to the internet to find one. For some people, meeting up with one or two couples who have experienced the adoption process is a better way to proceed. Either way, you should come away from these experiences with some great advice.

Now is a good time to have a talk with your extended family and very close friends. Let them know that you will need support from them, and be willing to answer any questions they may have. Unfortunately, some adoptive parents run into problems with family and friends not understanding the desire to adopt and making inappropriate comments. Keeping an open dialogue may solve a lot of these issues. The Internet is a gold mine of adoption resources. Simply type adoption into a search engine and you will be met with tips for adopting, expense calculators, and information about adopting from different countries. These kinds of resources can be great for those families who have not yet found an agency. Many families find an agency through these websites.

One of the most important things to remember as you go through the adoption process is that you aren't alone and that you have resources available to you. Adoption is a relatively common thing and there are plenty of places to turn to for help or answers. - 22783

Potty Training Problems

By Paul Jason James

Potty training is new territory for your toddler. Up until now, they have been happy-go-lucky, learning about her new world at there own pace and making all kinds of exciting discoveries. They have learned how to form sounds into words that communicate what they want, she's learned how to put her legs under her and walk and all this was done at her own pace. They probably thinks she invented walking and talking. Now all of a sudden, someone has decided she will no longer relieve herself in her diaper and plops her down on a potty and tells her to "go".

This is fertile ground for potty training problems. Prevention is the Best Cure Look at potty training from the child's perspective. What kind of introduction has she had to the toilet and the bathroom in general. Has this room been off-limits before now? Let her follow you into the bathroom before you start potty training her. Answer the questions that occur.

Let her flush the toilet and sit on it with the lid closed first. Believe it or not, many children are afraid of the toilet. They see things go down and not come back and wonder if that can happen to them.

When they are comfortable being around the toilet, let her sit on the seat. If they feels afraid, buy her a potty seat that snaps on securely or a potty chair. Humans are born with the fear of falling and sitting on a toilet seat with nothing under her can make your child feel like she's going to fall.

Regression, is when a child begins to learn potty training, then suddenly seems to lose ground. Children who were perfectly happy to go along with the potty training routine all of a sudden begin having accidents frequently. Regression isn't always a problem.

There may be an external factor such as a change in the environment that's causing the regression or it may just be that they want to slow down a little. Most experts agree that periods of regression are normal during potty training and, unless there is a medical condition such as a urinary tract infection, they do not need intervention. Simply continue to gently encourage her with her potty training and they will get back on track.

Most potty training problems can be identified by looking at them through your child's eyes. Inconsistencies, fears, punishment for accidents and regression can all trigger potty training problems. - 22783

Potty Training Advice

By Paul J James

There is no shortage of potty training advice available to parents going through the process. Like all advice, though, parents need to filter what they hear through their own parenting beliefs and methods. Keeping a few fundamentals in mind makes this much easier. Be Patient

Any advice that suggests parents "force" their child to potty train faster should be discarded. A child becomes potty trained in his own time according to his own physical and neurological development. Just like walking and talking, potty training requires a certain level of development

Be Consistent

This is half the battle. A child learns through repetition. If his potty training program is the same from day to day, he learns what to expect and becomes more secure. That's not to say you can't add a little incentive now and then, but don't change the entire process overnight and expect him to adapt.

The best way to ensure consistency is by having the plan well thought out before beginning and making sure others who may help your child with potty training are informed. It's important that the same process be used at all times. Beware of any advice that would require drastic changes to his routine.

Be Informed

The more you understand about how a child becomes potty trained, the easier it will be for you to meet and address any obstacles you may encounter. There are many good parenting books available that address this issue. This also makes it much easier to recognize good advice when you hear it.

Most potty training advice is given with the best of intentions. Being able to sort and sift through it to find things that will work well for you can strengthen your potty training program and make the process more enjoyable for everyone. - 22783

A plan to potty train your child?

By Paul Easton

There are a lot of kids who basically potty train themselves but there are a couple who are utterly resistant against potty training, and will actually turn it into a battle of wills. Because of this, experts suggest that the only way to deal with a strong willed child is to make potty training fun.

To help parents with this, "June was declared as Potty Training Awareness Month" and during this time, parents could call a direct line and talk to pediatricians and child psychologists and ask potty training questions from parenting experts.

This move was made to make parents realize that toilet training is really and that though it can be frustrating sometimes, help is available for them. According to experts, children develop control over their bodily functions at the age of 18 to 19 months but the fact shows that only 4% of children are actually potty trained at the age of two.

Experts agree that there's no point in toilet training before children are able to control their bodily functions and forcing potty training can result to anxiety and fear of the toilet. It is best that parents prepare their kids for potty training so that they can start learning to be comfortable with the toilet and eliminate procrastination.

Starting potty training too late can allow incorrect patterns of behavior to develop so you too, wouldn't wait for your child to become ready to potty train themselves, you will need to condition them but you need to start the training right.

Some parents prefer to start potty training during summer or spring since kids need to wear lesser clothes plus, the vacation affords them enough time to master toilet training. One mistake most parents make with potty training is that they become impatient for results.

Frustration can only lead to more mistakes so you better start learning how you can forget the failures. Punishing your child for accidents can only lead to more problems and even more frustrations - something you should definitely avoid. Potty training is more effective if you use a tailored approach. You need to find out what works for your child and focus on the things that your child does right.

It is important that you stay positive and chart your successes. This way, your child will be motivated to continue learning despite the many frustrations he may have encountered during potty training. Get your child to be comfortable with the idea of potty training. This means you need to introduce the potty chair and other potty training supplies early.

Have your child practice putting on his training pants, cleaning up the mess and washing his hands after using the potty chair.

Repeat desired behaviors and be aware of your emotions toward potty training so you don't transfer negative emotions to your child. Also, be consistent with the training method you are using. Once you've stopped using diapers, make sure to keep your child out of them.

Don't switch back and forth between diapers and training pants. Make everyone else involved with potty training advice - from grandparents to the daycare provider, make sure everyone knows what method you are using. - 22783

Reading Books to Your Baby

By Elizabeth Ellis

The sound of mother's voice is what a baby, even before birth, would usually recognize more than anything else. This is because in their young and innocent mind, only a parent's voice can get his attention. Reading books to him as early as newborn stage would give him the assurance of your protection and caring.

Introducing the books to your baby would largely depend on the baby's developmental stage. At the early stage (at least the first three months onwards), your infant recognizes your voice and would listen much to the rhythm of your language instead on the content of the book. Because of this, you can read any reading material you want as long as you read it slowly out loud. When your baby is no longer an infant (usually from six months onwards), big hard bound books with colorful pictures and images are the best materials. As you read these kinds of books, the baby will mimic your voice and would even coo the words and rhythm of your language.

When your baby reaches one year old, his interest for books would grow wider because of your daily reading of books since birth. This is expressed through his fondness in turning the pages of books and holding the books with his little hands. You would also notice his recognition of the pictures and how he can associate the sounds to the pictures. Because of this, you should give him books that he can hold by himself with pictures of things and animals familiar to him. You may also try to introduce other books to ensure that he will enjoy reading books in different packages.

The main advantage of reading to your baby is on his language acquisition. Babies, who have been read to, learns all the necessary sounds and sound meanings to speak a little of his native language even before his first birthday. Also, children who have been read to during their early years were observed to already read long before kindergarten. They also gain a head start in developing their comprehension skills, which is particularly helpful in understanding mathematical concepts.

Furthermore, reading books to your babies during their early stage would also tighten the parent-and-child relationship. As parents read books to their little ones, they will tend to feel protected, secured, and safe and this is one of the steps in building his self-confidence. These feelings would greatly affect the child's social, emotional and cognitive development and progress which are essential in his growing years.

To help you read books easily for your babies, use colorful materials with attractive images and short stories as the content. This will keep your child's attention intact and learning will be a lot more enjoying for them as they go through pages with colorful and interesting images.

Getting the right books for your babies is the key for their early advancement in language, vocabulary, and other developmental benefits. Give your kids the right materials for reading so they would enhance their skills as early as possible. For kids on the teething stage, provide books made of cloth or rubber so that the books will stand over time. Babies are naturally attentive and attracted to colorful pictures of animals so make sure that the books you choose for them contain these. Make sure also that there are new book introduce to the baby from time to time to further widen the information they get and to increase their chance for proper brain development. You can look for reading materials at some book stores or you can also search for the materials online by surfing the internet. - 22783

A Guide to Buying Used Baby Furniture Cribs

By Gregory Tersigni

Before you commit yourself to buying a used crib for your baby you should consider some rather important points. Even thought it is essential that these points should not be overlooked if your baby is under a year old, they are also pertinent whatever your babies age.

The first part of a crib that you should thoroughly inspect is the mattress. It is very important that it fits the crib snugly and does not create any gaps.

A gap between the mattress and crib side is a dangerous place where your baby could get stuck. If the used crib you are buying does not come with a mattress then do not buy it until you know for sure that you can find a mattress that will fit in it properly.

If the crib does come with a mattress, make sure that it is not ill-fitting. And, also ensure that the bottom sheet you will be using fits snugly and is intended for use in cribs.

Thoroughly inspect the crib's stability and craftsmanship. Check for loose or missing screws. Also examine the corner posts. These should be no more than 1/16th of an inch high. A higher post is a place where your baby's clothes could get stuck.

Another place where you should take note of gaps are those between the slats. The spaces should be no wider than a soda can and obviously, there should be none missing. If the gaps vary in width the baby could get stuck. They should be secure and sturdy and have no cracks. To be one hundred percent sure take note of each one.

Some cribs have shapes cut out at the top and bottom, on the head and foot boards. These can be both attractive and appealing but nevertheless should be avoided. If the cut outs are large enough, your baby's head or foot could easily become stuck.

If the crib you are thinking of buying has mesh attached you need to make sure that it is properly attached and is not torn anywhere. If the holes in the mesh are too big the baby's clothes can get stuck. Therefore, it is recommended that the holes be no larger than a quarter of an inch.

The above mentioned guidelines are the same ones that the government stipulates should be met. Chances are you are not considering buying a particularly old crib and so you will probably find that many of the ones you view will actually meet these requirements. It is important that you are able to make an informed decision so that your baby will not be placed inadvertently in harm's way. - 22783

Life's Lessons Learned From Baseball

By Elizabeth Ellis

We can't stress enough how important a game like baseball can be to a child's life. There are so many life lessons that come from a team sport, we don't even know where to begin. Then again, it really doesn't matter where we start because all of them will help your children grow.

As a student of the game, your children learn the concept of teamwork. Having your friends rely on you at a young age will only help your kids as they get older. It will make them more responsible for their actions, and allow others to trust them more. Best of all this will spill over into everyday life as time passes by.

Your child will also learn this very important lesson: there are things in life besides winning and you can't win them all. No one will tell you that they've never lost anything in life (at least not if they're being truthful). Loss can actually help to provide perspective and teach children that it's not whether you win or lose that really counts.

On a sports note, your kids will understand that they cannot get better without practice. The way your child works during practice is the way he or she will play in the game. Moving forward takes hard work, and even if you youngster isn't at an age to understand this they soon will be.

Our favorite life lesson learned from baseball has to be that no one knows everything. When a child enters the sporting world, coaches will be able to teach them various ways to practice and become better. It will allow them to understand that in order to progress they will have to stop and listen.

Most children can even teach us parents a life lesson or two about baseball. Just watch your child the next time they lose game. Usually the next thing they want to do is go eat some ice cream, get their free soda from the concession stand, or head home and play with friends. Why dwell on something like losing a baseball game, when you'll get to play again next week.

Playing team sports is also supposed to be fun. Organized sports like baseball can help your children learn some important things about life and provide a structure which they can apply elsewhere in life while being fun to do. However, if your children need to be cajoled into getting to the ballpark, then you may want to find something else which they enjoy more as an activity for them.

There are many other things to learn from baseball other than hitting and catching. Unity is part of life that many people take for granted. A team sport like baseball can keep this right in front of your children each year. Who knows, they may teach you a thing or two throughout the course of their baseball careers. Even if it is just t-ball through little league. - 22783

Do Halloween Contact Lens Require a User License?

By Helen Winfield

Have you thought of making costume contact lenses part of your Halloween costume this year? Theatrical costume designers have called on the use of contact lenses to transform the appearance of actors on stage and in movies for many years. The eyes are where most of us look first when we meet someone, and simply changing the appearance of the eyes can make an actor seem more handsome, beautiful, dangerous, magical, inhuman, or whatever the designer wishes.

For years, actors have been able to radically change their appearance with contact lenses. Now you can too, and you can have a lot of fun with the idea. If you have your own crazy ideas and are prepared to pay the extra cost, it is even possible to have a custom design made for your contact lens. Just make sure you allow enough time to get the work done for you before your Halloween party.

The idea is to change not just the color of the iris of your eyes, but also the shape of your pupil. The center is kept clear so you can still see, but the rest of the contact lens has become like an artist's canvas, open to any imaginative design desired. This year you will have an astonishing range of contact lenses to choose from.

Contact lenses also come in size variations. The most common are round and fit over the middle of your eye. If you are prepared to pay more and take more time over fitting the lenses, you can choose sclero contact lenses that cover most of your eye. Imagine what you would look like with all of your eye glowing red or green at your Halloween party? What will you look like wearing Halloween contact lenses?

You can select alien looks, including contact lenses with movie character themes such as Dune and Vader, or become an out-of-this-world banshee, predator or slither.

Unexpected or unnatural color choices are favorites. For Halloween a red eye fits the theme closely. Plain opaque black or icy white eyes can send a chill down the spine of those you meet. There is a vast range of fun colors available now to give you a unique and distinctive appearance. Designers have had a ball coming up with imaginative shapes and patterns. Logos, sports team themes, flags and patriotic themes like stars and stripes, smiley faces, hypnotic spirals, spider webs, computer chips and all manner of fun ideas have found their way onto contact lenses. Imagine your pupil in the shape of a star or a square instead of round.

If you have your own crazy ideas and are prepared to pay the extra cost, it is even possible to have a custom design made for your contact lens. Just make sure you allow enough time to get the work done for you before your Halloween party. Most designer contact lenses are plano, or usable by anyone whatever their eyesight. If you need corrective lenses to see clearly, these days you can also have most designer lenses made up to your own prescription.

Caring for Your Child With Asthma

By Asthma Aunt

Childrens asthma attacks can be caused by a reaction to certain substances or airborne irritants. This can then irritate the airways causing excessive mucus to be produced by the body in an attempt to lubricate the dry airway. The build-up of this mucus can cause a narrowing of the airway, leading to a shortness of breath and the wheezing sound characteristic of an asthma attack.

The irritation created by a certain stimuli causes inflammation on the bronchi (passage airways) leading to a constricted airway. Asthma in children is usually triggered by exercise, allergy, irritants, infections, weather and even emotion. These triggering factors constitute a possible asthma attack. That is why proper child care of asthma in children should be given.

It is important, if you can, to discover what caused your child's asthma attack. As soon as possible ask the child what she was doing at the time of the attack and if your child was at school or in child care at the time check with her teacher or carer if there was anything in particular that produced the attack. Try to keep a diary of your child's health to identify patterns of her asthma attacks.

Of course you should always consult the appropriate health care professionals on a regular basis to help with management of your child's asthma. It is important that you and your child both feel that you can trust your doctor and that you can turn to them for advice when you need it.

Should your family doctor suggest an asthma management plan for your child, this should be followed, but it is vital that this is explained properly both to you, as a parent, and to any other carers responsible for the child's wellbeing. A good relationship with your child's physician will make for a more relaxed home management of asthma and this will be of benefit to your child and to you.

The 3 most important factors in the care of a child with asthma are proper treatment, knowledge of what causes it and care of the child.

An asthma attack is definitely unpredictable but once you are prepared it can easily be stabilized. Being able to stabilize your child's asthma condition will lessen the burden that asthma inflicts to your child. Certainly, your child's asthma condition would generate improvements with appropriate asthma home management while consistently coordinating with health professionals.

Every parent only wants the best for their child and for that, they will do anything just to ensure their child's welfare. There maybe steps to keep asthma under control but the parent's love and support to their child is certainly the best treatment even medication cannot match. - 22783

Money Saving & Other Ideas For Buying Baby Clothes

By Paula Heron

One of the biggest problems with baby clothes is that they don't last very long, because your baby quickly out grows them. Planning your baby clothes shopping trips around the growth of your baby will certainly save you money. So here are seven tips to think about when planning your next shopping spree for baby clothes:

* Always buy a larger size than they actually need because babies grow so fast. Clothes that fit perfectly now will probably be too small in a few weeks. Buying baby clothes in a larger size will extend the amount of time they will be able to wear them, thus saving you money.

* When checking the size labels on the clothes look at them in terms of age, for instance 6 or 9 months , and then think about what the season is going to be when your child reaches that age. Not only will you have clothes that fit but that are also right for the time of year.

* If you have ever struggled to get a wriggling or crying baby dressed you will be aware that choosing clothes with back openings or that go over the head is not a good idea. Front opening outfits with either poppers or velcro fastenings save you and your baby a lot of stress.

* No matter how careful you are your baby is going to spill food down his clothes or dribble or be sick on them. Make sure you have enough changes of clothes to deal with these messy accidents.

* It is always a good idea to check out the clearance rails in the stores first rather than paying regular prices. Most store have bargain rails, especially when they are swapping out seasonal clothes, and sometimes they discount them even more at the cash register. If you shop during sale time and on the clearance racks you can save a lot of money.

* Don't be too proud to accept hand me downs from family and friends. This can save you a lot of money and as babies from birth to about nine months do not wear their clothes out many will be nearly new. You may also find that some of the outfits haven't even been worn as often parents are given far more clothes than their baby needs.

* You can make a little bit of money by selling your nearly new baby clothes on line (eBay for example) or in a yard sale or perhaps a thrift shop. Although you probably won't get back the money you paid for them originally you should make a little bit of cash.

If saving money while getting the most use out of the clothes you buy for your child is important to you, then the tips in this article may be of some help. Think about these ideas the next time you go shopping for baby clothes and they may well help you save some cash. - 22783

Mothers Day Poems Express your Love

By Cynthia Dyers

Of all the big questions in the world - what is the meaning of life? Why are we here? Who ate the last Hobnob? - There's only one that needs no explanation and that is 'why is my mum so fab?' Mums just are - they feed and water us, spend years cleaning up after us, drive us about to parties in our teenage years, bite their lips (or not) during your first home hair dye experiment and generally provide a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear and a ready hug for the whole family. So having said all of that, it's amazing how easily we sometimes take our mums for granted - and a fair few of us are still taking home our dirty washing of a weekend or cadging lifts into town when we're old enough to be looking after ourselves!

Speaking of presents, some of the greatest are those which involve your time - time being the most precious thing any of us have! You can use the power of the internet to use yours most wisely too... Instead of traipsing around the shops on a busy Saturday, battling the crowds only to find a fairly run of the mill selection of Mother's Day gifts, why not click online and check out the huge range of perfect presents to buy on the net?

The beauty of online shopping is its speed, the huge array, and the ability to compare items and of course the speed in getting your Mother's Day gifts ordered, dispatched and arriving on the doorstep in record time! And of course with this time that you've saved, you can treat your mum to some of your valuable hours by finding a gift to enjoy together... for example there are various excellent 'experience' days or trips which are fantastic gifts. If your mum fancies tasting the high life for a day - and let's face it, who doesn't! - then whisk her off to London to see a top-notch show and enjoy a meal too - before you stay for the night in a city centre hotel. This is a fantastic present which will give her plenty of memories to treasure and enjoy - not mentioning a healthy dose of excitement and escapism from the everyday grind! We all need some luxury and pizzazz in these difficult times!

To motherless children, of any age, Mothers Day poems contain sentimentality unlike any other type of writing. The ideas and emotions that are expressed within the lines never fail to stir their hearts and souls. These words they read also create a longing in them to experience those feelings of a mother's deep and patient love.

Many of the Mother's Day poems that are popular for this special occasion will bring smiles and tears to the eyes of both sender and recipient. The depth of feeling in many of these is unabashedly sentimental and will tug at the heartstrings as the words bring back memories of years that have passed too quickly. Mothers Day is one of the most popular of all occasions and it holds many records. There are more cards and flowers bought at this time of year than any other. Even phone calls on Mother's Day will fill the airwaves as children anxiously and eagerly make contact with that one person in the world who has always loved and cared for them, their Mother. - 22783

12 Fears Adoptive Moms Have That You Shouldn't Ask About

By Lisa Copen

It's no secret that adoption can be a scary experience and those who adopt are well aware of those worries and uncertainties. If you know a friend or family member who is adopting, one of the best ways to be a supportive friend is to avoid offering reminders of all of those fears. They already have enough things keeping them up at night.

Oftentimes when people adopt their loved ones come to them with every kind of scary story or worst case scenario situation they have heard about. While it's true that not all adoptions end with a happily ever after forever family, most do. Families who are adopting are well-aware of all of the situations that could occur, and for their own personal reasons, they have chosen to go forward with the adoption.

The family that is adopting could even specify that they would be open to adopting a child who has special needs, is disabled, or is (gasp!) a teenager. It's nearly impossible for anyone to adopt who has not received counseling in preparation; and the more challenging the circumstances, the more counseling may continue after the adoption is finalized. Everyone desires, the same thing, which is the best outcome for themselves and the child.

To you, their friend, it may feel like they are making a choice because of a pull of the heartstrings, and not a realistic wise decision. But contrary to you feeling the need to educate them on the realities involved comments about it will likely only create conflict in your relationship.

What are some topics you should avoid asking about? Some examples are:

[1] Are you nervous that you won't bond with the baby since you didn't carry it?

[2] What if your child doesn't look anything like you?

[3] Isn't adoption really expensive? How can you afford that?

[4] Sometimes adoption can turn into a real nightmare when the birth father wants rights. What exactly do you know about this guy?

[5] Do you have to pay for the birth mom;s medical expenses? What if she changes her mind about the adoption after the baby is born and just takes off?

[6] Some day she will be a teenager and want to run off and live with her birth mom. What will you do then?

[7] Aren't you scared that his real mom will change her mind and fight to get him back?

[8] What if your child has some genetic disease and you could have avoided it if you'd known his medical history?

[9] Do you think you can love her as much as your other kids?

[10] Older children come with a lot more emotional baggage. Have you considered getting a baby so you'd be the mom from day one?

[11] Did you hear that news story about the birth mom who kidnapped her adopted child because she changed her mind?

[12] Are you anxious that he isn't really yours until the court date?

While it's true that adoption is full of unknowns, parenting in general is a learning experience each day. If your friend or family member is adopting, or has just adopted, understand that they don't necessarily need your input to make sure they are aware of fears that can accompany the adoption journey.

Each family that adopts must choose to surrender over the fears and hope. Your support as a good friend is more valuable than any questions you can ask. - 22783

How To Launder Baby Clothes

By Paula Heron

Because more attention is now focused on a baby's skin sensitivities and allergies, parental concerns about not only the clothes they buy for their children but also how the clothes and bedding are washed - and which detergent to use - have heightened.

One solution is to use a purpose-formulated detergent specifically for baby clothes, but this adds yet another item to the list of expenses that parents take on when they start a family - as if it is not daunting enough already. Preparing the nursery, buying a crib and stroller plus baby clothes, diapers and so on is followed by additions to the weekly budget including food, medical costs and other expenses. Is it really necessary to use some special laundry detergent for baby clothes alone?

It may be worth using a gentle detergent on the whole family's laundry including the baby clothes and bedding. Choose one that has no added colors or perfumes. And recognize the the so-called specially-formulated products with baby in mind are frequently very little different than the normal brand, with just as much ability to irritate the skin on an adult as a child.

One point to bear in mind is that manufacturers use specific and sometimes irritating chemicals in preparing their clothes for final presentation out in the stores, so you should make sure that all new baby clothes and bedding are washed carefully before first using them on your child. The same is true of hand-me-downs and used clothes given to you by your family members or your friends - a gentle wash before first putting them on your baby will minimize the risk of any rash developing. And of course a medical professional should be asked to check out any rash that develops right away.

The concept of a specialized detergent for baby clothes has grown relatively recently and it was virtually unknown thirty years ago when I raised my family. It is difficult to appreciate why a separate detergent is required when your baby comes into close and frequent contact with clothes laundered in mild family detergent - after all, you hold your baby and cuddle him closely, don't you, with his head and face on your arms, neck, shoulder and chest?

However, parents making use of cloth diapers have one extra thing to consider. Cloth diapers must always be washed separately. Rinse away any solid waste in the toilet bowl, store them in a bucket of water until you're ready for washing them and use tea tree oil in the water for disinfecting and deodorizing purposes - just a couple of drops are enough.

Discontinue the use of any detergent that contains a fabric softener if you have any reason to be concerned about it. And if you do use a separate fabric conditioner, choose one that is formulated for sensitive skin and that the whole family can use.

Pay attention to how you tumble dry your baby clothes to avoid shrinking them. Use a low or gentle heat setting, otherwise you may find that your baby outgrows them even faster than you expect!

Ultimately, the main message to take away from these notes is that modern babies are just as hardy and well-adapted as they have been for hundreds of years - so the immersion of their clothes into the family laundry load is unlikely to cause too much harm any time soon! - 22783
