Sesame Street

By Jake Kanders

Elmo, the red-furred Muppet at Sesame Street, has become very popular until now. For over 20 years in the industry, Elmo has been known for its unforgettable appearance with its red fur, large eyes and orange nose. He is simply adored by his viewers for being optimistic, outgoing, imaginative and friendliness.

Kevin Clash was the one who started the character of Elmo. From being known as Little Monster, Elmo began his trademark giggle and positive attitude with the help of Clash. His talent and strong enthusiast raised Elmo and gave energy on his character, which inspired the writers to develop Elmo's character as well.

Elmo's hobbies are playing, learning new things, looking at books and laughing. He is self-described as three and a half years old and his birthday is on February 3. His show, "Elmo's World", together with his pet goldfish named Dorothy is a sure hit to toddlers and preschoolers.

Elmo's appearance continued into different talkshows such as The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Martha Stewart Living, The Tony Danza Show, Rove Live, The View and even Oprah. He appeared on TV shows such as Teen Kids News, Emeril Live! and The West Wing. Rep. Duke Cunningham requested him to testify before the US Congress and became the only non-human puppet to appear there last April 2002.

Dancing, singing and painting are only a few talents that Elmo taught the children, they also learned about trust, friendship and love. Parents can't get enough of Elmo because aside from being educational and their topics such as letters, numbers and even Spanish, their children love them for their humor. Elmo's craze has been passed from one generation to the next.

Elmo's deep concern about the kids' feelings and behaviors are the best part about him. Not only did he prove that he could teach them lessons and manners at the same time, he also proved that the children will live their life in a special way. They learned that being different is not a problem as they grow. They also learned that making friends is a wonderful thing. - 22783
